Want to up your medical SLP game? This fast-paced education and networking symposium provides updates on using a “whole patient” approach evaluating and treating dysphagia in the adult patient across medical settings. Normal swallowing will be reviewed. Making recommendations with your patients, while honoring their wishes, will be discussed. An overview of esophageal considerations will be included. The importance of lab values and considerations of the whole body will be discussed. Tools for determining treatment options following the principals of motor learning are provided. A workshop on utilizing motivational interviewing, an effective tool in engaging the patient with treatment, is included. Finally, lively round table discussions will take place at the end of the course where participants can engage directly with each instructor. This will be a full day loaded with information that you can take with you to work on Monday. Helpful handouts will be included. Lunch is provided. During the round table discussions, hors d'œuvres, beer, wine, and non-alcoholic options will also be included.

Learning Objectives:

  • Following this course, participants will be able to:
  • Describe normal swallowing based on current evidence.
  • List underling esophageal disorders that may influence oropharyngeal presentation.
  • Discuss the importance of understanding lab values and all body systems in evaluating and treating dysphagia.
  • Outline methods for identifying evidence-based and theory-based treatment approaches for dysphagia.
  • List key components for performing motivational interviewing.

Instructors:

Beth Cormell, M.S., CCC-SLP

Beth Cormell has been a Speech-Language Pathologist for over 25 years. She graduated from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, and is currently working as a clinical SLP at UNCRex Healthcare in Raleigh, NC where she initiated the FEES program in 1997. Beth has been instrumental in training clinicians and implementing new FEES programs throughout the country. She has taught FEES courses for more than 18 years, has presented short courses on FEES implementation and application at state conferences and at the ASHA Convention.

Julie Huffman, M.A., CCC-SLP

Julie Huffman is a practicing clinician with 25 years of experience in medical speech-language pathology. She works at UNC Rex Hospital in Raleigh, NC, where she is a treating clinician and serves as the clinical preceptor for SLP staff.  She provides dysphagia evaluation and treatment, as well as mentoring, in a variety of settings including outpatient rehabilitation, acute care and skilled nursing. She has been instrumental in devising protocols to include consideration of the esophagus and GI system for both FEES and MBS studies. Julie has taught on dysphagia, FEES and esophageal disorders nationally and internationally for over 14 years. She was an invited speaker at the ASHA convention in Boston in 2018 and has also taught short courses at NCSLHA. Julie’s guest presentations on the “Swallow Your Pride” podcast episodes 33 and 34 were rated in the top 5 by SLP listeners in 2019. Julie’s clinical interests other than dysphagia include voice, VCD, chronic cough, and neurogenic communication disorders. Julie is a graduate of the State University of New York at Buffalo.

Megan Nosol, M.S., M.Ed, CCC-SLP

Megan holds a master’s degree in Speech and Hearing Sciences from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Since graduating from the UNC's SLP program in 2013, Megan has been a clinician in the skilled nursing, outpatient rehabilitation, home health, and non-profit organization settings. 

Megan also holds a master’s degree in Secondary Education, which has permitted her to use her passion for teaching to instruct webinars and courses for SLPs, such as The ARK-J Program Trismus Intervention Certification Course, “The Evolving Swallow: Managing the Effects of Chemo, Radiation, and Surgery” webinar, and “Filling in the Gaps: Missing Components of Dysphagia Therapy” course with Ed Bice, M.Ed., CCC-SLP. Megan has been the guest speaker for the popular SLP podcast, Swallow Your Pride, in the "ABCs of HNC: Important Considerations for Your Patient with Head and Neck Cancer" episode and “So You Want to Get Your PhD”episode. She also served on the 2019 ASHA Head and Neck Cancer Topic Committee. Megan’s main interests are head and neck cancer-induced dysphagia, dysphagia neurorehabilitation, and counseling.

Brooke Richardson, M.S., CCC-SLP

Brooke Richardson, MS, CCC-SLP is a Medical Speech-Language Pathologist at UNC Rex Hospital in Raleigh, NC. She has more than ten years of experience treating adults with complex medical needs in the acute and outpatient settings. She has been instrumental in developing and expanding the Respiratory Muscle Training program at UNC Rex Hospital. Prior to joining UNC Rex, Ms. Richardson was employed at Duke University Hospital where she was sought out by colleagues for her clinical expertise. She is a graduate of the Medical Speech-Language Pathology program at the University of Washington. 

Brooke is currently employed full-time in acute care. One of her greatest passions is the ICU, and she has been key in establishing the interdisciplinary early activity/mobility program at UNC Rex.  She has taught her acclaimed course, "Respiratory Muscle Training for the MedSLP" nationally and internationally, and has provided multiple webinars for Medical SLPs including "An Introduction to the Influence of Body Systems on Swallowing" and, in collaboration with Beth Cormell, "Lab Values for the MedSLP".  Brooke was an invited speaker at the NCSHLA Healthcare symposium in 2020, and has twice been featured on the popular Speech Uncensored Podcast.  She is passionate about all things MedSLP.

Course Completion:

Successful participation in this course includes 100% attendance. Participants who attend the lecture only must be present from 8:00 am to 4:15 pm for full participation. Participants who attend the full conference must be present from 8:00 am until 6:45 pm for full particpation. All participants who successfully complete this course will receive a course completion certificate via email within one week of the course date. If you would like your participation reported to ASHA, you must indicate this at the time of registration by including your ASHA number. ASHA CE Providers have up to 45 days from the course's end date to send your participation to the ASHA CE Registry. The ASHA CE Registry processing time usually takes one week.
